A Hauntingly Hilarious Hit: Young Frankenstein at The Core Theatre

At Production LX, we love bringing creative visions to life through expert technical production—helping every show look and sound its very best.

Running from 22nd–26th July 2025, Young Frankenstein lit up The Core Theatre in Solihull — and we were proud to provide the lighting design and sound services that brought this hauntingly funny musical to life.

Based on Mel Brooks’ classic comedy film, Young Frankenstein follows Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, as he inherits his family’s Transylvanian estate. Determined not to repeat his grandfather’s mistakes, he soon finds himself caught up in spooky experiments, eccentric characters, and laugh-out-loud moments as he brings his own monster to life. Packed with witty dialogue, clever songs, and a perfect mix of gothic horror and outrageous comedy, the show is a hilarious twist on the Frankenstein legend.

With its mix of gothic mystery and over-the-top humour, Young Frankenstein demanded a technical approach that could embrace both the eerie atmosphere of the story and the fun, larger-than-life style of a panto.

Lighting Design: Dark Meets Comedy

Our lighting design for Young Frankenstein aimed to capture the gloomy, gothic aesthetic central to the show’s story while weaving in moments of vibrant colour and humour to highlight the comedy.

We achieved this by combining moody washes, sharp contrasts, and pops of bright light that mirrored the dual tone of the production. The use of practicals and set electrics—fixtures built directly into the scenery—added realism and helped bring the set to life, whether illuminating Frankenstein’s eerie laboratory or enhancing the comic timing of key moments.

The result? A visual experience that felt dramatic and theatrical, but with just enough panto sparkle to keep the audience laughing along.

Sound: Every Word, Every Laugh

Great comedy relies on clarity—so for Young Frankenstein, audio quality was a top priority.

We provided 16 Sennheiser radio microphones for the cast, ensuring every lyric and punchline carried clearly across the theatre. Alongside the equipment, a dedicated sound engineer worked throughout the run to mix the show, keeping everything balanced and polished from the very first note to the curtain call.

The combination of professional equipment and expert mixing gave the production the sound quality it deserved—engaging the audience in every moment, both spooky and silly.
